It Is So Obvious!! Why Don’t They Just Get On With It?

How to lead a team - Leadership training

Having just finished a Power Group session for business owners in the UK, I was inspired to write to you about the importance of not judging or making assumptions. All too often I hear leaders say, “But it is so obvious, why don’t they just do it?

I love the word ‘just’. How often do you use that word?

If I were to say it is easy you ‘just’ have to listen without judgement to understand why they don’t just do it?

The reality though is that if something is not happening it is likely that it is far from easy or a case of just doing it.

For example this week in order to promote our latest training programme I ‘just’ have to create a new sales page and an event link. The reality though is that I need to listen two a couple of videos to update my knowledge on how to word that page, I have a to do list in my head that has been niggling me for weeks.

You get the idea, the actual task ‘may’ be simple but how often are we forgetting what else is being managed by the person and how do you know if they have the skill and confidence to achieve that.

In this fast pace world the most important thing is communication. No matter how great technology is or how important the client is, you as a leader will have to make the time to think clearly and listen to yourself and others without judgement or assumption.

But you already know that don’t you? So why don’t you just do it?

What happens in between knowing what you should do and knowing how you will do it?

For many it can be like a huge chasm or it requires letting go of something else or learning something new. It is no different with your team, you might tell them ‘what’ to do but if it is another task on their to do list or something new to them or something they lack confidence with, just like you, they may not ‘know how to make it happen’.

 Listening can:

  • Bring about change fast
  • Save time and money because the focus is on the solution not the problem
  • Enable you to manage yourself and others more effectively
  • Increase productively and efficiency
