I did start by calling this article “How to lead a team with confidence in 3 ‘easy steps’ then I realised that it is only easy for me now because I have practised this approach for a number of years. It is worth remembering what is easy to you has most likely been learned over a number of years. What I do know is that when you apply these 3 principles consistently leadership does become easier. Investing in your own leadership training and development is an iterative process and an on going journey.

Step 1: Clarity, focus and understanding

There is no getting away from the fact that taking time to listen to yourself to gain clarity, focus and understanding makes it much easier for you to communicate to your team.The more clarity and focus you have the more confident you will be when you are communicating with your team.

How clear are you right now about what you would like to have happen?

Can you articulate it in a way others will understand?

Or do you fall into the common trap of be able to clearly explain what you don’t want rather than what you ‘do’ want.

How clear are you about what you expect from the team?

Step 2: Unravel the assumptions and misconceptions that can hold your communications back

It took me a while to recognise just how often I made assumptions.

Two questions that really helps me question assumptions and judgement is:

How do I know that?

What do I hear and see that informs me of that?

Step 3: Develop Resources and skills to work at your best with others

It is all too easy to have our thoughts and conversations consumed by what is not working. Learning to focus your mind on what is happening when it does work or imagining what it would be like if it were at its best, can give you access to resources you need to work at your best more of the time. For example rather than saying I need to be more organised, take a moment and recognise what is happening when you are organised or when organised is at it’s best that’s like what?

What would you like to have happen in the next 90 days/12 months and or 5 years?

What would be happening if you were leading and working at your best?

How do you need to be, to be leading like that?
